David On The Duomo

Today, a replica of Michelangelo’s David was raised onto the Duomo in the centre of Florence. Weighing in at 400kgs and standing at over 5 metres tall, the copy was commissioned as part of the Florens 2010 event. Over 4 days, the statue will move around key areas of the city after spending a day and night in the position that was originally planned for the statue when it was commissioned in 1464

Travel Warning To US Citizens

Today, US citizens will be issued with a travel warning after US officials received specific intelligence about an attack. “Al Quaeda could be planning something somewhere in Europe” an official stated.

Though this is not yet official, this is the official warning about the warning which is soon to be made official.

The warning will include all places where there are people such as buildings, airports, cities, towns, villages, hamlets and single dwellings. The warning will be kept deliberately vague in order to maximise the negative impact on tourism and trade. When asked if the Administration was actually doing the job of the terrorists for them, an official said

“We remain focused on Al Qaeda’s interest in attacking us and attacking our allies. We are determined to find that man that lives in a cave who remarkably manages to plan a lot of things yet stays well hidden. Do you know how many guys have beards in Pakistan? I’ll tell you it’s a lot. I mean that’s the needle in the… sorry, what was the question?”

The warning could fall under the “worldwide caution” warning which goes along the lines of “it’s a dangerous world out there so it’s much safer to stay at home, watch infomercials and stuff your face. Also, if you stay at home you spend more money here and that’s good for the economy. If you give money to the Europeans they only squander it anyway, spending it on cigarettes, 7 different types of cheese and questionable fashion.”

Once the warning is made public, it will reduce the safe-travel locations for US citizens to Antarctica, Greenland and Northern Waziristan.

Sarzana, Liguria – a great (and unusual) day trip from Florence

Two weekends ago, we went out of Tuscany to visit some friends in Liguria. They live in Sarzana which is a lovely walled town and small enough to see on a day trip. You can watch the video of Sarzana on the FlipFlorence main site.

The Gemmi cafe is in the centre of town and has great pastries as well as good coffee (of course!) Sarzana can be teamed up with half a day at the beach. After lunch we drove down the coast as resorts like Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio are not too far away (about 30 and 40km respectively)

Florence Gelato (Ice Cream) Festival – a short video

This weekend saw the Florence Ice Cream festival and I managed to fit in a little filming on the Flip alongside eating quite a lot of ice cream (OK, too much really, but it’s only once a year).

As with many of these events in Florence, there was loads to see alongside the central points: Piazza Della Repubblica and Piazza del Duomo as well as other areas of the city contained temporary ice cream freezers with semi-organised pushing, sorry, queuing peaking around 9pm. There were loads of flavours to choose from so I went for a €4 taster giving me 5 ice creams to choose. I started with fruit and moved through nut to chocolate. My friends did this process backwards but each to their own!

I appreciate that not everyone has an iPhone but I thought this would be a cool way of getting some of the Florentine vibe for those who do. I’ve tested it on my own phone and it works perfectly.
Posterous have told me that when I upload an .m4r (Apple ringtone) file it’ll be converted to MP3 for you to play but the source file for download is the original. So, download the file, double click it and iTunes should open automatically. The file will be in your ringtone section, sync your phone and it’ll be available!
